UNDER 16 HURLING:
Ferrybank's U16 hurlers welcomed Cois Bhride to Ferrybank
last Wednesday night, and following a good game of hurling, it was a share of
the spoils on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-17. It looked like Ferrybank might hold
out for the win, but three unanswered points from Cois Bhride late on ensured
they didn’t leave empty handed.
Charlie McLoughlin opened the scoring for Ferrybank with a
well taken point, and soon after Ryan Tierney sailed through the Cois Bhride
defence to score a fine goal. Cois Bhride began to settle and sent over three
unanswered points to close the gap, and with little to separate the sides in
the first-half, Jack Keogh-Moran was first to latch on to a loose ball in the
Cois Bhride defence to put the ball into the net, just before half time, to
leave Ferrybank 2-03 to 0-06 at the break.
Cois Bhride closed the gap with two points, and just as it
seemed they were getting on top, Ferrybank dug deep with Charlie McLoughlin
scoring four points in succession. With the game in the balance, Shane Oates and
Nathon Carton scored points to leave Ferrybank three points ahead entering the
closing minutes, however Cois Bhride began to finish stronger and Cian Martin
in the goal pulled of a top class save with a fine stop.
Cois Bhride kept battling and scored three points to grab a
draw. A good display for the team who gave it their all on the night.
SCORERS: Charlie McLoughlin (0-06), Ryan Tierney (1-02),
Jack Keogh-Moran (1-00), Shane Oates (0-01), Jack Haley (0-01), Nathon Carton (0-01).
Next up is a home game against Cappoquin on Friday August 18th at 7pm.
JUNIOR HURLING:
Ferrybank and St. Saviour’s played out an exciting draw in
the latest Whites Bar Championship game in Ferrybank last Friday, with the
sides finishing on 2-18 each.
St. Saviour’s made the better start with the opening four
points. Ciaran Doyle settled Ferrybank down with the side’s opening score, and
moments later Philly Blake went on his trademark solo and scored a fine goal to
level it up. From there on, Ferrybank began to get on top with Tommy Carew and Greg
Murphy (3) scoring fine long range scores, and, just before half-time,
Ferrybank got a second goal when Tony Heffernan received a pass and planted the
ball to the net. Further points from Philly and Doylers ensured a 2-10 to 0-09
lead at the break.
St. Saviour’s began the second-half on top, and got a goal
early on, and four quick points had them level. With the game in the balance,
Darryl Griffin popped up with two fine points. St. Saviour’s looked dangerous
on the attack and Keith Power pulled off two crucial saves to the visiting team
at bay. Just as it looked like Ferrybank might hold out for the win, as Greg
Murphy and Tommy Carew scoring points, St. Saviour’s levelled it up with a
goal. Ciaran Doyle put Ferrybank ahead in the last minute, but with the game
almost up St. Saviour’s won a free, which was put over the bar for the
leveller.
This was a good game of hurling by both sides and a draw was
a fair result. The lads now play away to Ballyduff Lower next with the date and
time yet to be confirmed.
