JUNIOR HURLING:
Ferrybank’s Junior hurlers came up short last Saturday
afternoon in the final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition against St.
Molleran’s on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-11, in a game which took place in
Dunhill.
Despite leading by three points in the second-half, St.
Molleran’s took control in the final quarter, scoring two goals, which put paid
to Ferrybank’s hopes. The opening exchanges were keenly contested, with Philly
Blake cancelling out two St. Molleran’s points, but the Carrickbeg outfit’s forwards
looked sharper and caused a few problems in the Ferrybank defence. This was
reflected on the scoreboard with St. Molleran’s hitting four unanswered points
to open a healthy lead.
Keith Power in the Ferrybank goal had to be at his sharpest
as St. Molleran’s looked for the goal to put clear daylight between them, but
Ferrybank held out and slowly created a few chances. With Philly Blake leading
the charge hitting three points, followed by an excellent Alex Power score,
Ferrybank trailled by the minimum at the break 0-8 to 0-7.
Ferrybank started the second-half on the front foot and
quickly went into the lead with a fine goal from Alex Kinsella who latched onto
a loose ball, and blasted the sliothar on the ground to the back of the St.
Molleran’s net. Points from Philly and Tony Heffernan saw Ferrybank open a
three point lead. However, St. Molleran’s still looked dangerous in the forward
line and they began the comeback with three points to draw level. Minutes later,
Molleran’s got their opening goal when a long ball into the Ferrybank square sailed
all the way into the Ferrybank net.
Reduced to fourteen men, Ferrybank fought back with James
Murphy and Philly Blake points to get it back to three, but a second St.
Molleran’s goal killed off the game. From there on St. Molleran’s took control
of the game, scoring another four points to run out worthy winners.
Despite this defeat, this was a great effort from the lads
during the campaign, losing a few players to the Intermediate side, but they
knuckled down and recorded some great wins all the way to the final. Thanks to Ciaran
and Pat for looking after the team during the season, and no doubt they will be
back next season.

UNDER 15 HURLING:
No joy either for the Under 15 hurlers last Saturday morning
as they were defeated in the Under 15 County final by Stradbally in Kill on a
scoreline of 2-12 to 2-06. The lads failed to repeat their heroic effort in the
Eastern final, as Stradbally proved too strong for them over the course of the
game.
Despite a Ruaidhri McGarrity goal, which had them leading
1-03 to 0-3, Stradbally picked up the tempo, putting over 2-06 in reply, to open up an 2-09 to
1-04 lead. Tried as they did, and led by Reece Phelan and John Collins,
Ferrybank replied with a goal from John, and hoping for a revival, the men from
the west closed out the game with a couple of points, running out deserving
winners.
Despite this defeat, the lads can look back on a great
season, and the future bodes well for these players. A special word of thanks
to Martin Freeman for looking after the team during the season.

The main gate prize on the night which is kindly sponsored
by Harvey Travel Gladstone St, is a weekend away for two people in the four
star Castlerosse Hotel, Killarney including two nights B&B and evening
meal. Also an Attic Stairs & Fitting courtesy of Murphy Larkin Carpentry,
plus many more prizes.
On the night itself, there will be a courtesy shuttle bus,
which will bring patrons to and from the greyhound track. The buses will leave
opposite the Spar Shop at 6:45pm, and will return after racing from Kilcohan
Park. The first race is off at 7:50pm. All in all, a great night is assured, so
once again, support your local GAA club, bring along your friends, and enjoy a
great night at the dogs. We look forward to seeing you there.
