Ferrybank GAA - Weekly Notes

UNDER 21 HURLING:
Ferrybank / Erin’s Own combined Under 21 hurling went down to De La Salle in the final of the Eddie O' Donnell Monumental Works sponsored competition in Walsh Park last Sunday afternoon following a superb game of hurling which went to extra-time, where De La Salle proved too strong in those additional 20 minutes.
The combined side put in another excellent second-half display and were seconds away from winning the match in normal time, where a last gasp converted free from De La Salle sent the game into extra-time.
De La Salle made the better start and put the opening two points on the board, but Mark O' Brien got the combined side on the board with two points. With De La Salle up by two points, the combined side got a goal on twelve minutes when some excellent defensive play from Daniel Coady set up the attack and John Ahern struck a low shot to the De La Salle net for a fine goal. Another point from John had the combined team ahead, but moments later the combined defence got caught out and De La Salle came through to score a goal.
With the match finely poised, Ferrybank / Erin’s Own started to come a lot more in to the match, and another brace of points from Mark O’ Brien had them a point behind. However, two pointed frees from De La Salle gave them a 1-08 to 1-05 lead at the break.
Just a minute had gone in the second-half, when a long ball into the De La Salle defence wasn’t dealt with and Tiernan Morrissey shot into the net to draw the sides level, but like the first goal, De La Salle struck back immediately with a goal of their own, when a low shot deceived Jono in the goal and into the net.
Moments later another De La Salle attack almost produced a third goal, but Jono Brown again pulled off another top save.
The combined side refused to lie down, and points from Mark O’ Brien, Robbie Carew and Mark Shanahan had them ahead. With MJ Sutton and Craig Browne in the half-back line driving them on, De La Salle were now in a real battle. With the game in the balance points from John Ahern and Mark O’ Brien drew the level. With the game in injury time, Mark O' Brien hit over a fine score to put them ahead and it looked like it was going to be the winning score, however, in the last few seconds De La Salle were awarded a free, which they duly converted to bring the game level at 2-16 each.
With the game less than thirty seconds gone in extra-time De La Salle broke through the defence with a goal, and they continued the scoring trend with four more scores. Despite points from Mark Shanahan and Sam O' Neill, De La Salle were now on top as Ferrybank / Erin’s Own were beginning to tire.
Four more points in the second-period of extra-time saw De La Salle run out 3-25 to 2-18 winners and retain their trophy.
It was tough on Ferrybank / Erin’s Own, and going into the game they were complete outsiders, but what an effort they gave and they can feel proud of their performance on the day.
Credit to the management team, who had prepared the team during the competition. It was also a fitting tribute to see Mark O' Brien awarded the Man of the Match award, with a superb display over the sixty minutes, and it was a shame to see him retire through injury in extra-time, let’s hope it not too serious.
Thanks to all who came along and supported Ferrybank / Erin’s Own on the day.
PANEL: Jono Brown, Daniel Coady, John Frampton, Stephen Long, Craig Brown, MJ Sutton, Tiernan Morrrissey (1-0), Gavin Jacob, Mark O' Brien (0-11), Sam O' Neill (0-01), Jeff Lawless, Mark Shanahan (0-02), John Ahern (1-02), Robbie Carew (0-02), Eoin Daly, Sam Robinson, Ross Kennedy, David Atkins, Alex Kinsella, Jack Wicks.

Ferrybank GAA - Weekly Notes

UNDER 21 HURLING:
The Ferrybank/Erin’s Own combined U21 side qualified for the final of the Eddie O' Donnell sponsored competition with a ten point win over Mount Sion at Walsh Park last Saturday afternoon. A superb second-half performance from the combined side, which yielded 2-16, paved the way for this victory.
It didn’t look great early on as Mount Sion were sharper and had three points on the board in quick succession, but Eoin Daly settled the nerves with two points from play as the combined side began to get into the game.
Points were traded from each side with Mark O' Brien and Sam O' Neill scoring for Ferrybank/Erin’s Own. However, some poor frees conceded kept Mount Sion ahead and when the lively Eoin Daly popped over another fine score, Ferrybank/Erin’s Own trailed by one. Yet again however, soft frees cost the team as Mount Sion scored two unanswered points to leave them ahead 0-09 to 0-06 at the break.
Ferrybank/Erin’s Own came out all guns blazing in the second-half, and in the opening two minutes points from Eoin Daly, Mark O' Brien, Robbie Carew and MJ Sutton had the combined side ahead for the first time. A crucial turning point in the game came when a Mount Sion attack looked like leading to a certain goal, but Jono Brown pulled off a brilliant point blank save to prevent a green flag being raised. From there on, Ferrybank/Erin’s Own never looked back, with points from Sam O' Neill, Mark O' Brien (3) and Mark Shanahan extended the lead.
Ferrybank/Erin’s Own were now dominant in all areas, and with 10 minutes remaining John Ahern turned his man and struck the ball low into the net. Further scored from John, Sam, Robbie, and the impressive Mark O' Brien had them in the driving seat. Credit to Mount Sion however who battled away and scored two late goals to reduce the gap, but with the last play of the game, another impressive move saw John Ahern score his second goal with another fine strike to leave it 2-22 to 2-12 at the finish.
An excellent display from the team, particularly in the second-half, and no doubt the lads can look forward with confidence to the final where they take on the holders De La Salle next Sunday (November 27th) at 2pm in Walsh Park.

PANEL: Jono Brown, David Atkins, John Frampton, Stephen Long, Craig Browne, MJ Sutton (0-01), Jamie Knox, Mark O' Brien (0-09), Gavin Jacob, Mark Shanahan (0-02), Sam O' Neill (0-03), Jeff Lawless, John Ahern (2-01), Robbie Carew (0-02), Eoin Daly (0-04), Tiernan Morrissey, Daniel Coady, Ross Kennedy, Sam Robinson, Alex Kinsella, Jack Wicks.

GREYHOUND NIGHT:
Our annual night at the dogs took place in Kilcohan Park last Saturday night, and it turned out to be another great night. A large crowd from the village made their way over, and enjoyed the thrills and spills of greyhound racing, with a lot of close finishes on the night.
The main gate prize on the night, which was kindly sponsored by Harvey Travel, was won by Maria Forristal, with Jim Jackman winning the attic stairs courtesy of Murphy & Larkin Carpentry, with John Hassett, Mickey Organ and Chris Hoban also claiming prizes.
A huge effort goes into this night, and the club is very grateful to the people who purchased tickets, nominated a dog on the night, our sponsors, and to those who advertised in our programme, and we would ask everyone to support our sponsors and advertisers.
Also thanks to Carl Pallas and his staff at Kilcohan Park for their assistance in organising this event. Once again, thanks to everyone, and roll on 2017.
